Beyond Survival: Joy, Embodiment, Expression
Finding Calm and Building Resilience
You can use these tools both as interventions when you're feeling dysregulated and as preventative practices to strengthen your nervous system’s ability to recover and manage stress.
Changing Your Relationship to Social Media
How To Take Back Your Time from Your Phone
-
Delete any apps that you have a challenging relationship with off your phone - try a 72-hour rule and see how you feel; reassess your boundaries for each app from there.
-
You can limit your app usage via the settings on your phone, setting timers that put hurdles between you and using them
-
Replace social media with practicing self-regulation tools to discover what works for you: try quiet meditation, guided meditation, yoga nidra meditation, short meditations, long meditations, meditation with sounds, yoga, pilates, walking, going outside and breathing in fresh air, exercise, hiking, EFT tapping, reading/audio books on somatic and trauma healing, prayer, singing, chanting, journaling, timed writing, 4-7-8 breathing, slow mindful breathing, binaural sound etc
Titrating the News
News titration is like building a dam: you control the flow, letting in only as much information as your nervous system can process. This helps prevent overwhelm and dissociation, allowing you to stay grounded and respond to the news in thoughtful, meaningful ways.
6 STEPS TO TITRATE YOUR NEWS
-
Find news sources you trust - while social media gives us access to information not on mainstream news and in real time such as at protests it also is a space for misinformation, even when well intentioned
-
Learn the information (listen/read)
-
PAUSE if needed - this is key to the titration process
-
Digest it - attempt to analyze, process, consider what, if anything, needs to be done
-
Breathe / regulate
-
Assess next steps - return to listening to the news, continue self-regulating, etc.
BEST PRACTICE: Get your news from multiple sources!

Beyond Survival: Joy, Embodiment & Expression
A personal note from Jay Herman, practice owner:
“As a baby queer struggling with depression and suicidal thoughts, I never believed joy was my right and could not be taken from me. After years of therapy, healing from trauma, and moving through my own gender transition and journey of self-discovery and self-love, I don’t believe that anymore. It’s not about toxic positivity (which I definitely had an affair with) or that I feel happy every day or don’t experience hard times or life events.
It took a long time to get out of operating in a constant survival mode. Discovering that I have tools (like my breath) inside me to slow down my nervous system and that these cannot be taken from me no matter what happens in this world helped me pause and reflect. That I can dance and move my body anywhere and any time. That I can write all the poetry and hexes on the systems of oppression no matter how hard they try to clamp down on me or my body. That I can find, build and cultivate community and care. I can find joy and presence in my body. No one can take that from me.”
